Introduction

When you use themeit there are a number of settings available that allow you to control and influence the output that is produced. 
Working with these settings is optional, and just using the default values is fine. However, understanding how these settings work, and what their purpose is will help you get the most out of the tool. 


How to access themeit settings

The themeit settings can be accessed by clicking the "Settings" button on the "Start Coding" page when you first run themeit on a task. 

Basic settings

There are three basic settings available are as follows: 


  • Create Nets
    If enabled, themeit will generate a codeframe containing nets as appropriate. The nets are not guaranteed, but the larger and more granular you codeframe is the more likely it is that themeit will include nets in the autogenerated codeframe. 
  • Max Themes
    Places an upper limit on the number of themes that the autogenerated codeframe can contain. 
    Your codeframe may end up containing fewer themes than the maximum, depending on your data. 
    If you leave this setting blank, themeit will  default to a maximum of 100 themes within the autogenerated codeframe. 
  • Autocoding Mode
    Controls the guardrails applied when autocoding is applied to your data. 
    This setting has two options: 

    "Minimise Coding Gaps" - will only autocode verbatims where the AI is certain all the themes within the verbatim have been captured. This will result in fewer verbatims being autocoded, but a higher level of accuracy. 

    "Maximise  Coding Volume" - will apply codes to a verbatim even if the AI knows some themes within the verbatim have not been captured.  This will result in a higher number of verbatims being coded, but potentially at a lower level of completeness.

Advanced settings

There are two advanced settings available are as follows: 

  • Question Text
    Allows you to provide the details of the open survey question that was used to elicit the verbatim data being analysed. 
    Providing this information gives the themeit AI useful contextual information, which allows it to autogenerate a more appropriate and accurate codeframe. 
  • Required Themes
    Allows you to specify themes that you are looking for or expecting in the data. Sometimes this is useful if you have a pre-existing codeframe, or if there are specific themes that you are expecting based on your knowledge of the research and/or domain at hand. 
    The themes you specify will be included in the autogenerated codeframe, regardless of whether any verbatims actually contain that theme.
  • Required Nets
    Similar to required nets (above) allows you to specify nets that must exist in the autogenerated codefrane
    This option is only visible if you have enabled "Generate Nets" (see above)
